Lucott House: First Floor Extension to Garage Opening to Existing House
Workglobe Developments Ltd were the main contractor for this project working closely with us, as owners of the property, and realising David’s design for the extension over an existing garage. Workglobe Developments Ltd sourced local and reusable materials and local craftsman to construct the building to match existing build.
A great deal of thought was put into the choice of materials and the design to ensure that the works were not only appropriate to the existing building but were also sympathetic to the Englishcombe vernacular. For example, the waney edged cladding used on the gable end can be found, not only on the front elevation of Lucott House, but also on several other buildings in the village including the Tithe Barn.
Another challenge was to design and construct an appropriate external access to the new build. Our choice of material, green oak, and the traditional construction methods have enabled us to produce, in the opinion of many friends and neighbours, a very appropriate, safe and sympathetic outcome.
Whenever there is a design proposal in a small village – especially in a village as beautiful as Englishcombe – there are going to be some concerns expressed. However, without exception we have been complimented about how well this extension sits with the existing building and local environment, even to the extent that it has enhanced the property.
Workglobe Developments Ltd carefully carried out the work mindful of neighbours minimising disruption around the site and completed the project within an agreed timescale. Andrew and Graham Cottle kept us closely involved in all decision making and with regular updates.
